UNA-NCA Pays Tribute to Anne Hale Johnson
By Karen Mulhauser, Past President, UNA-NCA

All of us who knew Anne were not surprised to learn that she died on January 18, 2018 – she was 94 years old – but we are deeply saddened. Anne and her husband Art were active members and supporters of the UNA-NCA family since the 1990s. Anne has served on our Advisory Council and over the years has been an active and loyal supporter of our educational programs and advocacy goals. When Art died in 2011, Anne helped us create and define the Arthur W. Johnson Leadership Award that has been given to long-standing UNA-NCA leaders. One of my greatest honors was receiving this award the year after its inauguration and having Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton present it.

But I have known Anne long before then through our common passion for gender equity and a woman’s right to make reproductive choices. In addition to her strong support for UNA-NCA, Anne’s life work is reflected in her support for progressive ideas in religious communities and various organizations dedicated to women’s rights. She served as Board Chair at the Union Theological Seminary where she received a Master’s Degree in 1956. The Union Theological Seminary trains people who wish to enter the ministry from diverse religious backgrounds. Over the decades Anne has been a volunteer leader with groups such as Pathfinder Fund, Planned Parenthood, and Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, National Council of Churches and The Interfaith Alliance. She returned from the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing with wonderful stories and was always eager to share a good story about her life journey. One gets a wonderful glimpse of Anne with this excerpt on Vimeo and this lovely Planned Parenthood story.

Anne will be missed by her family and her many chosen families such as UNA-NCA. Donations to UNA-NCA in honor of Anne are welcome and appreciated. Contact the UNA-NCA office at 202-223-6092 for more details.
