Statement from Our President on the Syrian Refugee Crisis

September 14, 2015

It is the kind of record that should never be broken - 60 million refugees and displaced persons fleeing from war, starvation, ethnic conflict, brutal regimes, and natural disasters. The work of the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and its partners in the UN and civil society is heroic. Humanitarian Workers are engaged 24/7 in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia and elsewhere coping with the unfolding tragedy of the young 21st century. The crisis is massive, and regrettably long term as well. According to the US Institute of Peace, refugees remain displaced for an average of 17 years. UNA-NCA's Peace and Security Committee, along with the Alliance for Peacebuilding, held a roundtable discussion on May 21st at the Institute of World Politics that brought together experts from the UN, NGOs and Middle Eastern states to address the immediate and long term strategies needed to address this crisis. Its thoughtful report and recommendations will soon be available on the UNA-NCA website.

UNA-NCA is planning additional programs to address these issues and generate support for much needed humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters in crisis and we open our pocketbooks to help UNHCR meet the extraordinary and unprecedented financial challenges it faces. Nancy and I have decided to celebrate our 41st anniversary by making a contribution to UNHCR. You may also contribute online to USA for UNHCR at unrefugees.org/donate, by phone to 1-855-808-6427, or by mail to:
1775 K St. NW, Suite 580

Contributions to the World Food Program, UNICEF and other UN and civic organizations involved in reponding to the crisis would also be appreciated.
