Release of UNA-NCA "The World We Want" Community Consultation Report

UNA-NCA is delighted to present the report of the community consultation held in Washington, D.C., on October 29th at the George Washington University campus. The consultation was based on the UN High-Level Panel's report to the Secretary General of the United Nations issued in July 2013 entitled "A New Global Partnership: Eradicate Poverty and Transform Economies Through Sustainable Development - Report of the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda." Celebrating International Human Rights Day

UNA-NCA celebrated the accomplishments of human rights leaders in our community at the 2013 Annual Human Rights Awards ceremony, held Dec. 12 at the Cannon House Office Building. Awardees included Elisa Massimino, President and CEO of Human Rights First, Dr. Sarah Degnan Kambou, President of the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), and Former Foreign Service Officer F. Allen "Tex" Harris.

Global Classrooms DC hosts Annual Fall Model UN Conference

Over 120 students from DC and Virginia schools attend the Model UN Conference.

Global Classrooms DC (GCDC) hosted its annual Fall Model UN Conference on Nov. 8 at the Pan American Health Organization. Over 120 students from the Washington, D.C. area and Virginia were in attendance at the full-day event. The conference was offered specifically to beginner Model UN students. The committees were designed as ‘training’ committees where students were guided through Model UN procedure throughout the day. The topic for the conference was Child Soldiers (UNICEF) and after breaking into small groups to write resolutions in the afternoon, students voted to support several of the resolutions on ways to combat the use of child soldiers.

US Government Shutdown Prevents UN Human Rights Review

UNA-NCA participates in Blog Action Day 2013.

The US Federal Government is now in its 16th day of a partial shutdown. If no agreement is reached by tomorrow, October 17, the US Government will reach its authorized spending limit and will begin defaulting on its debts and obligations for the first time in history.

Global Classrooms DC Featured in the State Department’s State Magazine

US Department of State Recognizes UNA-NCA's Flagship Education Program

UNA-NCA is proud to announce the UNA-NCA Model UN Program was featured in the September issue of State Department’s State Magazine (page 34). The State Department, through the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, has strengthened its partnership with UNA-NCA to greater support its flagship education program, Global Classroom DC’s (GCDC).

For over 11 years, GCDC has engaged DC area middle and high school students in global issues through its Model UN program. Students are able to develop skills in diplomacy, conflict resolution and leadership by simulating debates held in UN Committees and representing countries from around the world.

ASIL Hosts Third Midyear Meeting and Research Forum in New York City

Experts from the field and the academe converge to discuss new and ongoing research on international law issues

In cooperation with UNA-NCA, the American Society of International Law (ASIL) will hold its third Midyear Meeting and Research Forum from October 31 to November 2, 2013 in New York City. The event serves to enrich the ongoing discourse on international law.

The event includes:

• Reception and Keynote Address, United Nations

• Practitioners' Forum, with topics on:

    • "Enforcement of Arbitral Awards and Foreign Judgments"
    • "Finding and Following Custom"
    • "A Conversation with Legal Advisers"

• Lunch Panel, "The Future of International Law Scholarship: A discussion with the New Editors-in-Chief of AJIL"

• Research Forum with 18 unique sessions on a variety of international law topics

• Leadership Meetings

The ASIL Midyear Meeting and Research Forum is also held in cooperation with the American Bar Association International Section and the International Studies Association.

UNA-NCA to Participate in UN Day 2013 Celebration

Member of UNA-NCA will participate in Oneness-Family School's 2013 UN Day, held October 25

Director of Global Education, Emily Brock, will be carrying the UN flag during this year's celebration, alongside ambassadors and diplomats from Washington, DC embassies. In the past, nearly 60 ambassadors and representatives have carried their national flags during the procession of nations.

Students at the Oneness-Family School represent approximately 50 nationalities, and spend weeks creating displays, art and costumes to represent different countries. The students also prepare performances of music, dance and drama in honor of the event.

Following the program, there will be tours of the school, viewings for the students' displays, and an international luncheon for those who participated.
