Ambassador John Campell is the Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York. Rowman & Littlefield published his book, Nigeria: Dancing on the Brink. He writes the blog "Africa in Transition." From 1975 to 2007, Ambassador Campbell served as a US Department of State Foreign Service officer. He served twice in Nigeria as political counselor from 1988 to 1990 and as ambassador from 2004 to 2007.

Jon Temin is the director of the United States Institute of Peace's Sudan and South Sudan program. Mr. Temin’s commentary on Sudan and South Sudan issues has been featured by, among other outlets, the BBC, Al Jazeera, The Washington Post, Voice of America and National Public Radio. Prior to joining USIP, Mr. Temin spent five years with the non-governmental organization CHF International designing development and peacebuilding programs throughout Africa and elsewhere.

UNA-NCA chapter members, guests, and other area professionals and university students are invited to meet and mingle with individuals interested, studying, or working in climate change issues and United Nations sustainable development initiatives. This month we head to Mackey’s Public House.

Please look for our group near the UNA-NCA Sustainable Development sign.

The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Sustainable Development Committee promotes understanding of the impact of climate change, the priority attention being given to the issues by Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the responsibilities of governments and citizens to act. The committee is also committed to increasing awareness and support of the Millennium Development Goals.

What the UN Can and Should Do to Fight Corruption

Frank Vogl, a founder of Transparency International, will discuss his new book Waging War on Corruption-Inside the Movement Fighting the Abuse of Power to begin the conversation on corruption and transparency worldwide.  Vogl's book has received positive reviews from media sources, having already been featured in The American and in interviews with Trust.org and Voice of America.

Professor Janine Wedel from George Mason University and Nathaniel Heller from Global Integrity will follow with brief remarks on the topic before all three speakers invite questions from the audience.

with Siri Holland, Political Adviser, Norwegian Parliament
Norway offers an example of how brave political decision-making can make non-renewable energy incomes last for generations. Today the Government Pension Fund of Norway holds $594 billion and continues to grow. This talk will analyze the details behind this success story.
Siri Holland is a political adviser to the Labour party group in the Norwegian parliament, following the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs. She is at IERES this fall as an Ambassador Robert D. Stuart Fellow, and is working on politics and energy within the context of the international economy.
