What is Global Classrooms DC?

Global Classrooms® DC (GCDC) is the flagship education program of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA). GCDC works with a diverse group of middle and high school students, including some of DC’s most underserved communities, to improve their public speaking, teach conflict management skills, and expand their understanding of global issues while making local connections through original global education curriculum and Model UN. View our Annual Report online.

Who can enroll in GCDC?

GCDC serves students grades 5-12*, and open to all public, public charter, private, and international schools, homeschool co-ops, and student leadership organizations in the US and internationally. If you are a parent or single delegate at home who is interested in GCDC you may also register.

*If your students are grades 6-12 you can register for programming and conferences automatically online. If your students are in grade 5, please contact the Director of Global Education for further information about enrollment and participation.

What is Model UN (and why is it important)?

Model United Nations (Model UN or MUN) is an activity where students act as country delegates in the United Nations (UN), and simulate the conversations and topics that are discussed in UN committees. Students role-play a particular country in the UN, learning their country’s stance on particular issues, history, culture, and other important/interesting facts. Through in-class simulations and Model UN conferences, students prepare and give speeches to other delegates, negotiate and resolve policy issues with other countries, and prepare draft resolutions (solutions) to encourage international peace and security, and cooperation.

Model UN can help prepare students to be young leaders at home and abroad by introducing them to a number of issues worldwide including those surrounding peace and security, the environment, human rights and more. It allows them to critically think about these issues and discuss them with their peers, while also teaching and strengthening important skills including researching, writing, public speaking, and negotiation. Read why Model UN is important on the UNA-NCA blog.

GCDC encourages groups to think of Model UN as both an activity (something that is fun and engaging for  students to do in the classroom) and as an out-of-school club; implement what works with your resources, capacity, and goals.
