Lydia Daniels
Caroline is an architectural and international development professional with experience in climate adaptation & resilience, sustainable design, and equitable community engagement. Recently, Caroline completed a Master of Science in International Cooperation for Sustainable Emergency Architecture at UIC Barcelona where she engaged with several international partners and organizations serving urgent humanitarian needs across the globe. Now, she works as an East Regional Sustainability Specialist for SmithGroup. In this role, she works with local communities in the Nation's Capital Area to take climate action and engage diverse voices in design processes. In addition, she currently serves as a Social Impact Fellow at the Worldchanging Institute and as a Co-chair of the AIA DC Resiliency and Disaster Response Committee. Recently, she collaborated with the Urban Climate Change Research Network to advise global cities around just transitions to climate change adaptation. In addition, she assisted international NGOs, like CARE International, with guidance for resilient, dignified, emergency shelters in Northwest Syria by preparing drawings and technical information that will be used in the public Shelter Cluster guidance. Over the last decade, Caroline placed in several international architecture competitions, created neonatal ward renovation plans for 22 hospitals in Malawi on a USAID grant through the Rice Global Health Institute, shared findings from climate justice research in Cape Town at the Northern European Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS) Conference, and accepted numerous awards, including the Presidential Call to Service Award, presented by Barack Obama, for her completion of over 4,000 hours of community service. Her experience with research, design, and service spans Malawi, India, Jordan, Spain, Brazil, South Africa, Dominican Republic, Italy, China, Thailand, Uganda, Syria, Philippines, and the US. Her purpose is to serve others, using community-oriented, sustainable design as a catalyst to shape positive outcomes for both people and the environment.
