The mission of the UNA-NCA Peace and Security Committee parallels the primary mission of the United Nations, expressed in the Preamble to the Charter—to prevent “the scourge of war” and before to maintain international peace and security.”

In cooperation with other UNA-NCA committees and partners, the Committee sponsors a broad range of programs that bring together diverse experts to inform the public and policymakers, advocate for support of UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and strengthen the UN’s overall conflict management capability and effectiveness.

Programs have included recommending ways to further strengthen UN Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding, and efforts to Sustain Peace, including enhancing the role of women, facilitating global data sharing, engaging civil society including faith-based institutions, advocating for denuclearization, global cooperation in addressing climate change, pandemics, migration and refugees, and fostering international-local cooperation in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), most especially Global Goal 16 (establishing sustainable institutions that preserve peace and access to justice.)

Membership within the Committee provides a network that brings together diverse students of international affairs along with experienced professionals in the UN, US federal and local government, academia, think tanks, and many other sectors.
