Our commitment to the UN Association of the National Capital Area’s mission of educating and advocating for a strong partnership between the United States and the United Nations—and strengthening the multilateral system—has never been more important given today’s complex global challenges.
In today’s turbulent world, a strong U.S.-UN partnership is essential for global stability, security, and prosperity. Strengthening multilateralism is not just a diplomatic necessity—it is a strategic imperative for addressing global challenges, defending democratic values, and ensuring a more just and sustainable future. From food insecurity and pandemics to conflict resolution and humanitarian crises, no single country can tackle these challenges alone. The UN provides a critical platform for coordinating international responses and mobilizing resources, ensuring a unified and effective approach.
The UN plays a crucial role in upholding human rights, supporting free and fair elections, and holding violators accountable. U.S. leadership in the UN reinforces these principles globally.
Rising tensions between major powers, regional conflicts, and shifting alliances make diplomacy and multilateral engagement more vital than ever. The UN serves as a key forum for dialogue, peacekeeping, and conflict prevention, helping to prevent disputes from escalating into war.
Technological advancements, AI governance, cybersecurity, and outer space regulation require international collaboration to establish fair and effective norms. The UN offers a space to negotiate these frameworks, ensuring that they serve global interests rather than just a few powerful nations.
The U.S. can help restore faith in the international system by demonstrating that multilateralism leads to tangible benefits, including economic growth, security, and sustainable development.
The world is at risk of falling behind on key development goals related to poverty eradication, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Strengthening the U.S.-UN partnership ensures continued momentum in achieving these global priorities.
A weakened UN or multilateral system would create a vacuum that others may fill, potentially sidelining U.S. interests. By leading from within, the U.S. can shape the global agenda, strengthen alliances, and ensure international institutions reflect democratic principles.
Lead, Don’t Leave!
We urge that you stay actively engaged in our mission and programs as we work together to ensure a sustainable future for all.
Sincerely,
Anne Simmons-Benton, Board Chair
