The
Louis B. Sohn Human Rights Award is presented to persons who have:
- Advocated respect for international human rights as defined by the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other international human rights treaties and instruments;
- Championed the effective role of the UN as well as regional organizations in the promotion and protection of human rights;
- Advocated respect for human rights as a priority in US foreign and domestic policies; and
- Elevated the role of non-governmental organizations in promoting and protecting human rights.
